What to bring to the bunker

There’s been a lot of talk about earthquake preparedness in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, but precious little about Armageddon preparedness. And frankly, maybe it’s time we all gave it some thought. After all, beacons of light and joy notwithstanding, there are still an awful lot of people whose words and actions (or lack thereof) are the equivalent of taping a giant “KICK ME, HARD!” sign to our big, fat, collective American ass.

So lately, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about caves. As in, “Honey, what should we bring to live in the cave after they blow up our big, fat, collective American ass?”

I’m pretty sure we’ll need some kind of pedal-generator for power since the battery on my new iPod nano is only good for 14 hours, but other than that, what sort of items would be useful at the end of the world as we know it?

Here’s my working list so far:

  1. Water
  2. Bourbon (small-batch)
  3. Waterproof matches
  4. Carton of Marlboro reds
  5. Pringles, Sno-Caps and Space Food Sticks
  6. Blankie
  7. The BF
  8. Extra-large bottle of sleeping pills
  9. Second extra-large bottle of sleeping pills for The BF
  10. That stack of New Yorkers I’m behind on to read until #8 & 9 kick in.

    1. blanket (with big friendly letters…)
    2. pack of cards
    3. glow in the dark stickers of cute sheep (or stars)
    4. a load of Twinkies (I hear they keep indefinately, but I never had one)
    5. warm socks (hate cold feet)
    6. internet
    7. favourite cup (I plan to find running water in the cave…)
    8. a chicken (well, I like eggs for breakfast)
    9. a bacon machine (bacon is SO good with the eggs)
    10. and finally my meds, (or so the above seems to suggest)

    Helllllooo?

    Toilet paper! Mountain money!

  3. jake

Shot-gun, plenty of shells, 9MM pistol, plenty of rounds, traps, snares, spare boots, knives, compass, maps, cattle-prod, slim-jims, beef-jerky.

  4. I think a network of loosely-linked caves will be in order. I’m all for the TP, and I think Jake will tire of dried meat. But that shotgun might come in handy when we’re trying to hunt down a bacon machine…
