[...] UPDATE 6/11/06: I wrote this more than a year before I wrote about meeting Steven Shapiro and hearing his inspiring talk on Goal-Free Living at a Cornell alumni seminar here in Los Angeles. If you’re wound a little tight, or if rigid goal-setting has never worked for you, I encourage you to check out Steven’s book and/or website. His message is fun, his ideas are easy to implement and he himself walks the walk. And if you are a Cornell alum here in Los Angeles, I highly encourage you to join the Cornell Entrepreneur Network. I’ve met some really extraordinary people through it, and had fun doing so! [...]

i LOVE pity chat-ups! one moment you're sitting alone, obviously friendless and hoping to quickly tie one on, and the next moment you're engaged with extremely uncomfortable small-talk with someone who feels like this good deed will get him into heaven. the best way to end one of these meetings is with a hearty hug and eastern european cheek kiss and jowl rub.
