"To be truthful, I don’t have the best memory to begin with—or not the most reliable one, anyway. I blame my drug-addled 20s, but on top of that, I’ve always had an amazing, self-preserving way of remembering what I needed to and pushing everything else the hell out. (Raise your hand if you’re an adult child of an alcoholic.) "

I laughed so hard at this I almost spewed coffee out my nose. I never knew why I would swear on my life that the guy I met yesterday had a brown mullet and a parrot on his shoulder when he was really just a guy with short brown hair wearing a polo until I read this statement. It's so true...unless you need the information to survive, you might as well make it more intersting and colorful to store in the memory banks. Hilarious!

Jean - REally? You have mad skillz!!! What an incredible gift to give yourself.

Curtis - thanks for the tip. As you can tell, I made good use of Scott's post!

Gretchen - I know, right? Oh, well. Even if I can't use it for everything, it's a good tool for getting at stuff. And tools are cool.

Hey, I tried hypnosis too! It wasn't the easy solution that I hoped for -- wouldn't that be great, if that was all it took to make life-changing improvements? -- but very interesting. Now I'm off to read backwards through all your posts, to see what your experience was.

I've been a firm believer in hypnosis since I cured myself of a dental phobia when I was 16 years old. At the time I discovered a book on self-hypnosis and was blown away by the results. I have a small collection of hypnosis tapes now and just listen to them at bedtime if I need a tune-up. It's a lazy way of making changes. I figure it's my subconscious mind that's really calling the shots, so might as well get it to help me do what I want.
