Jeremy - Oh, THANK you!

dailytri - great analogy. *great*.

Mary K: Thank you! I've been working on that sentence for years, ever since I realized that none of my aunts had middle names. It summed up everything that was crappy and wrong about the way those women were raised. The men, too, come to think of it. Talk about breeding entitlement!

You write, "Mom grew up in a family where the expectation that women would accomplish anything significant was so miniscule that she and her sisters were not given middle names—they’d just lose them anyway, when they got married."

This was such a brilliant sentence to explain an idea that could easily become hackneyed and trite if stated outright. I stopped to read it a couple of times because I could SEE these people, I knew where they lived, and what they looked like. And my next thoughts were, "How stingy, because everyone needs a wonderful magical middle name."

Learning to take a compliment is sort of like learning to take a punch. At first there is a lot of dodging and weaving and wincing as you get ready to receive the blow. But hey, compliments don't tend to leave bruises, so take them with heart and head and enjoy.

Haha. There's a reason we find each other, isn't there? Are you ACOA, too, I wonder? Well, cheers to people leaving old, silly habits behind and working on new, cool ones!

"You do the work, and it’s expected you do it well..." Only WELL?? ;) Boy, do I ever relate to this post. "I have a dramatically stunted sense of entitlement..." You and me both, sister. I spent decades steering clear of those entitled ones who didn't see the need to do the work of 3 people while juggling plates and balancing on their heads. That light over my head finally lit up...but I think it's still only a 40-watt bulb.
