Jeanne - Embarrassed to say I've never seen xmas in CT. And I love Barbara Stanwyck! Right now, I just want it to get not-warm. Forget about cold: I've given up on that. Not-warm would suffice.

I'm there with you. This season hits and I'm major into downsizing the stress and jumping into escapist anything.

In addition to a pile of escapist books, my holiday movie preferences lean towards the old Christmas movies. The last few years I've been into Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwick. Love me some screwball romantic comedy...

Stephen - The best way to unwind! Well, an afternoon with a good book in a comfy chair's not bad, either. Or a nice finger of bourbon. Or...

Movies are great, though. If you want to be moved, RUN do not walk to see "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." It'll blow your doors off, in the good way.

Charles - You're right--an assist is fine, but a constant crutch, not so much. (Hey! I rhymed!) Glad to meet a fellow Clint fan. Hail and well met, and all that.

Jean - I must confess, I've now seen that movie so many times, I skip past that scene. It's pretty, but a little embarrassing. But one of the most amazing musical experiences I've enjoyed was an evening of that entire Roberta Flack album sung (almost) a cappella by a quartet of extraordinary singers. Mm mm good, that album.

Charles - Hmm. I'll try, but I'm a silence-for-writing writer.

I love this movie too. "First Time Ever," the theme, was my parents' "song" - how mushy is that? :-)

You are so right about the dual purpose of movies/TV - serving as background noise that keeps us company as we ramble about our homes. We all handle melancholy in different ways. The key is not to wallow in it for long. So we find what works to assist in lifting us up. A good Clint movie (or show [think Rawhide years]) will pull me out of any lugubrious funk - usually. I'm a huge fan of CE, by the way and it would make my day to meet him before he's taken from the Earth.

Hi there again:

I had to smile when I read this post today. I LOVE movies and belong to Netflix. EVen though I consider myself a "busy" guy, I love movies and will make time for it to unwind at the end of the day.

I love movies that make me cry. yeah, go ahead, call me a wimp but I LOVE movies that move me emotionally. I clap and shout "Thank you God for miracles like that." Then I go to bed a happy man.

Crazy? You decide.
